What is BNCweb

BNCweb is a web-based client program for searching and retrieving lexical, grammatical and textual data from the British National Corpus (BNC). Developed at the University of Zurich, BNCweb interacts with the BNC server program, SARA, to provide a convenient interface between the user and the rich variety of annotated text in the 100-million word BNC. BNCweb combines a whole range of features for corpus analysis - concordance display, sort, collocations, distribution analysis, and more - in an intuitive, user-friendly interface.

BNCweb requires no special installation procedure or client program on the part of the end user - any web-browser (under any kind of operating system) can be used to access the BNC. Access to BNCweb does, however, require a valid username/password - please contact your system administrator for getting access.
In its current version (2.0), BNCweb is exclusively compatible with the BNC World Edition. Users who only have an installation of the first release of the BNC will have to purchase a copy of the BNC World Edition before being able to use BNCweb.

Please Note: In order to run, BNCweb requires access to a full installation of the BNC World Edition (i.e. including the SARA server software and the index files) as well as some additional UNIX tools. It is thus not possible to use BNCweb in conjunction with the BNC Online service hosted by the British Library. This manual is for users of BNCweb only and assumes that BNCweb is properly installed - separate information for system administrators about sytem requirements and the installation procedure is available at http://homepage.mac.com/bncweb.
